This September, join us for our annual Step Up Challenge as we work together to change the narrative around suicide, from silence and stigma to recovery and hope. The Step Up Challenge stretches from World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th to World Mental Health Day on October 10th.
19,188 people died by suicide in Japan in 2025. Of these, 538 were children and young people from elementary to high school age, a number that has been rising as suicide remains the leading cause of death for people aged 15 – 29.
Overall, the number of deaths by suicide last year was the lowest since records began in the 1970s, reminding us that change is possible when communities invest in prevention, awareness, and support.
But the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health persists, and can make it hard to speak up when life is hard, leaving us to struggle alone with mental health worries or thoughts of suicide. We are inviting you to share the message that suicide is preventable, and that it is always okay to reach out for support.
Join us as we remember those we have lost by walking 19,188 steps, each marking a step towards hope and recovery through the power of connection. By starting conversations, checking in on each other, talking openly about our struggles and about the support that’s available, together we can make a difference.
Whether you are walking to remember a loved one or to show your support for those who are struggling today, you can help change the narrative. By taking part, you will also be helping to raise vital funds that keep our Lifeline available every day of the year, while supporting community education and suicide prevention training across Japan.
